A Message From Your New Principal, Lynda Holeva
It is with great pride and enthusiasm that I join Roosevelt Elementary School as your Principal!
Having spent the last year as the Assistant Principal for Roosevelt, I have experienced first hand what it is like to be a part of this wonderful community of amazing parent volunteers, exemplary teachers and staff who work hard every day to promote a safe, enriching and stimulating academic environment where all children may thrive.
I bring over 18 years of educational experience spanning grades K-6 with an emphasis on cross-curricular inquiry-based learning, Socratic Seminar and reading enrichment. I have also had the privilege of working with beginning teachers to develop their classroom management, instructional planning and delivery skills.
I am thrilled to bring my skills as an educational leader to Roosevelt Elementary, and to work closely with you as a partner in education to ensure our students are happy, productive, and achieving to their full potential.
I will continue the legacy of success established at Roosevelt Elementary by building strong relationships with parents, students, staff, and community partners. Together we will focus on fostering a nurturing and safe environment for children and continue the development and implementation of Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI), and Teachers’ College Reading and Writing Workshops to ensure exciting and challenging learning experiences for all students.
I look forward to working together to provide our students with the best possible opportunities in preparing them to be world class citizens ready to master the challenges of the 21st Century with a solid foundation created here at our school.
I hope that you and your family will enjoy your experiences here, become involved, and capture the spirit of our community!
A Message From Your New Assistant Principal, Debbie Stern
I am thrilled to be a part of the Roosevelt Elementary School community and SMMUSD! I bring more than 25 years teaching and administrative experience in the Los Angeles area.
Prior to joining Roosevelt, I served as half-time assistant principal at McKinley Elementary. For 20 years, I taught in a multiage program in Santa Monica Blvd. Community Charter School in Hollywood, where I also held several committee and professional development leadership positions and was a part of the team that wrote an initial charter, as well as a renewal charter. I taught at Westside Neighborhood School in Playa Vista; helped to initiate third grade at Citizens of the World Charter School; served as principal at Arts in Action Community Charter School in Los Angeles; and was an adjunct professor at Pepperdine University, Cal State Dominguez Hills and UCLA teacher education graduate program.
I am well versed in TC Readers and Writers Workshop, CGI, and project-based learning, and have been trained in several restorative justice programs, Council in Schools, and Socratic Seminar. I’ve led seminars and workshops on multiage philosophy, cooperative learning, and standards-based instruction. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Pitzer College, a Master of Arts in education from Pepperdine University, and a Master of Arts in school leadership from Cal State Northridge. I love working with our wonderful staff, and look forward to getting to getting to know our terrific group of students and families!
