The PTA’s annual Roosevelt Read-a-Thon is an event-filled and important fundraiser that promotes literacy and creates good reading habits that will last a lifetime.  It is also a time to help our school raise needed funds for future programs that benefit all the children of Roosevelt.

Here are some frequently asked questions about the Read-a-Thon, how it works and helpful links to flyers from the Read-a-Thon Packet:

How does my child participate in the Read-a-Thon?

During the Read-a-Thon EVERY CHILD in the school maintains a reading log.  For younger students who are not independent readers yet, this includes their “being read to” time and even “sitting and looking” at a book.





Your child has the option of gathering sponsors to make pledges for their reading time or for a flat donation.  Any amount raised will help and is greatly appreciated!  These sponsors are typically you, family, close friends, and neighbors, and parent’s work associates.  No child should go door to door.

Prizes For Fundraising

Grand Prize:  The student who raises the most money from sponsors will win Disney Tickets for 4!
Second Prize:  The student who raises the second most money from sponsors will win a subscription to Little Passports!

For students with 8 sponsors or raise more than $70, they are eligible to select a prize from the Prize Sheet!

What makes the Read-a-Thon special and fun?

TV Turn Off Tuesday – January 22nd, January 29th, and February 5th.

Commit to ditching the TV and other electronic devices and “get caught” reading!  For students who turn in their TV Turn Off Tuesday permission slip (enclosed in this packet), our Teacher/Parent volunteer teams may arrive at your home to “catch you reading!”  There are party horns, a bookmark & a special bracelet good for a FREE Book at Popcorn Friday for each child they catch.

Make sure TV Turn Off Tuesday permission slip is turned in to your child’s teacher or the office by Friday, January 18th.  NO LATE FORMS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

Roosevelt Read-a-Thon AUTHOR VISITS Return!

We are very excited to welcome two inspiring authors, Samantha Berger, and Elana K. Arnold, in grade level assemblies for our students.  Ms. Berger and Ms. Arnold will talk about their experience as writers and the importance of reading.  Book Order Forms will be available here soon!

Pajama Night – Thursday, January 31st

All TK, Kindergarten and 1st Grade students are invited to return to school in their PJ’s at 6:00 pm for special story time.  Our fabulous teachers will be reading their favorite bedtime stories in the kindergarten classrooms.  A parent/guardian must stay for story time; this is not a drop-off event.   Milk and cookies will be available at the conclusion of storytime.  Click here to RSVP and let us know you’re coming!

Reading Lounge – Monday, January 28th through Friday, February 1st

The Auditorium is transformed into the Reading Lounge with comfy sofas, bean bag chairs, and area rugs to give students an additional opportunity to log minutes during lunchtime recess. Students may bring their book buddy or choose from a selection of Roosevelt Library books.   Volunteers are needed to help monitor the Reading Lounge from 11:30 am to 1 pm.   Click here to sign up for a shift.

What can I do to be involved?

Encourage your child to read, read, read and spend 20-40 minutes each day reading to your younger students. Join the Read-a-Thon experience by signing up to volunteer for one of our many Read-a-Thon events!  We need an incredible amount of volunteers to make this a fun and successful fundraiser for our kids!  For more info and volunteer opportunities, contact Gina Orth at RooseveltReadathon@AOL.com.
