Pop Open a Good Book!

What is the Read-a-thon? The Read-a-thon is a fun PTA program that promotes literacy and creates good reading habits.  It is also a time to help our school raise needed funds for future programs that benefit all the children of Roosevelt.

When is the Read-a-thon? Fundraising and Reading Logs begin on Monday, February 1st and run through February 28th.  The final reading log is due on Monday, March 1st and all money pledged must be turned in by Friday March 5th to be eligible for the prizes.

How do students participate in the Read-a-thon? During the Read-a-thon every child in the school maintains a reading log.  For younger students who are not independent readers yet, this includes their “being read to” time and even “sitting and looking” at a book.

Students have the option of gathering sponsors to make pledges for their reading time or for a flat donation.  Any amount raised will help and is greatly appreciated!  These sponsors are typically you, family, close friends and neighbors, and parents’ work associates. Sponsors may also donate online at https://rooseveltschoolpta.org/read-a-thon/ Some parents choose to share the donation link on social media to help their child gather donations. No child should go door to door. See the enclosed Sponsor Envelope and Prize Sheet for more details on how to donate and win prizes for money raised to support our school. Make sure to turn in the Sponsor Envelope and donations by March 5th to be eligible for prizes (prizes may vary based on availability).

What about last years prizes? We still have all the prize information from last year.  We plan on distributing last years prizes along with this years prizes in April (prizes may vary based on availability).

What can I do to be involved? Motivate your child to read for 20-40 minutes each day. Read to your younger students. Take a look at the activity sheet with your child and encourage them to become involved with all the read-a-thon fun.

Activities

Reading Log

Be sure to fill out your reading log each day. The time you spend reading during school and after school counts. Your teacher may collect your reading log.

Movie Poster Design

Create a movie poster inspired by a book you read this month. Think about using colors and pictures to get your audience’s attention and give a hint about what the movie is about. Use the included worksheet with a frame on it. Return the poster with your Sponsor Envelope by March 5th for a chance to be featured in the yearbook!

Popcorn Post-Its

Use the included popcorn post-it notes to keep track of important kernels of knowledge as you read.

Menchie’s Bookmark

Menchie’s is supporting our Read-a-thon again this year with their popular bookmarks. Fill in the back of the bookmark with the titles of the books you read. Once you have it all filled up, have an adult sign it and bring it to Menchie’s to get a free frozen yogurt.

Popcorn Pop-Ups

Keep an eye out for a popcorn emoji on your reading assignments this month to earn bonus reading log minutes. When you spot a popcorn emoji, complete the assignment and record the extra minutes from the popcorn on your reading log.

Reading Star Wednesdays

Each Wednesday you have an opportunity to earn double the minutes by reading aloud to your biggest fans. You can read in person, through video chat (Zoom, FaceTime etc.) or on the phone. Parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends and/or stuffies all make a great audience. Once you finish reading, double your time and record it on your reading log. Try to read to a different person each week. Have fun! You can dress up to really get into the part. On Zoom, select a virtual background to enhance your performance.

PJ Night 6 to 7 pm

All students are invited to join a special evening zoom read aloud event. Our fabulous teachers will be reading some of their favorite books. Each PJ night is designed to entertain a specific grade level, so make sure to attend your grade’s night. The Zoom link will be sent to you before the event.

TK/K/1st Grade – Tuesday, February 9th

Walk of Fame Prize Sheet

As you raise money for the school, color in the stars on the walk of fame prize sheet to earn your rewards. Each star represents $25. Everyone who returns their Sponsor Envelope and prize sheet by March 5th will receive a prize! Prizes will be distributed in April along with last year’s prizes (prizes may vary based on availability).

Grand Prize

The student that raises the most money for Roosevelt will win a CINEMOOD360 portable movie theater valued at $499. The device includes streaming services like Amazon Prime & Disney+ and 120+ hours of preloaded content. Watch it anywhere your imagination allows — like the wall in your bedroom.
